Chalk and cheese

I know my boys share a fair bit in common. Both boys are quick and clever, both adore sports, both have a good sense of humor, both enjoy music. They play together a lot, from board games to outdoor games to screen games. (They fight a lot too.)

In spite of all this similarity, most days it's the differences that seem most apparent.

Josiah has an engineer's mind: he's logical, literal, steady, a Lego guy, and lately adores taking things apart (we have yet to reach the "putting back together" stage, alas!). A few weeks ago I came home from work to find that a large television had made its way from someone's curbside trash to our basement, where Josiah happily dismantled it for hours. He was delighted that Mama Cas and Pop Pop had taken him out to buy his very own screwdriver, too. He really couldn't imagine a better day!

William, on the other hand, is a fireplug with volatile emotions. He bounces between utter glee and outright rage throughout the day. He does nothing halfway, so when the idea took him a few weeks ago to bring something in to share with all of his kindergarten friends at school, he independently developed a detailed and elaborate plan to make gingerbread cookies, explaining down to how they should be decorated, exactly how many we'd need, what day we'd begin, etc. And although he's a whirlwind of a child in general, when his mind is focused on something, there's no deterring him. He stuck with the cookie project for hours.

Counting to keep track of our progress.

A few weeks ago I updated their annual photos, seeing as they hit ages 6 and 9 this fall.

Here are last year's taken in France too, for the record!
